FNCV Day Group

The Day Group is a little different from other FNCV sub-groups in that it takes a generalist or broad-brush approach to the study of natural history. It meets in the Gardenia St Blackburn hall at 10.30 am on the 4th Tuesday of the month.
This allows time for a morning cuppa and catch up, with the speaker scheduled for 11 am. The program is very diverse and of high quality, often from authors, film makers and leaders in their fields. For example topics in 2011 included:

  • Life in the banded ironstone country of Western Australia.
  • A trip to Iceland.
  • The nature writings of Jean Galbraith.
  • Documentary DVD - "The Curious Mr Catesby".
  • Photography as a stimulus to environmental observations and understanding.
  • A quick tour through some National Parks in western USA.
  • Waterfalls of Victoria.
  • The Yangtze and other rivers.
  • Travels in the Simpson Desert and Lake Eyre.

In the warmer months one or two morning excursions with local guides are scheduled: for example to Antonio Park Mitcham, Blackburn Lake or the 100 Acres.

The Day Group attendance has been growing since its origin a few years ago. It is especially appreciated by members who find it difficult to attend evening meetings.
However, just as the program is varied, so is the audience. Although many of the presentations involve travel, the focus is always on aspects of natural history.
Occasionally a talk which was given to one of the Special Interest Groups is repeated for the Day Group.

We are a friendly and enthusiastic group who welcome visitors and new members.
